In our series “Power of the Brain”, we are dedicated to showing you some of the fascinating ways in which our brains work. Here, in David Ariely’s Ted Talk, he discusses how our brain is tricked by various illusions, and how we have far less control and awareness over our decisions than we think. He talks about our tendency to choose the easier, “default” option, even when we seem to have free will. Often, we are completely unaware of the cognitive influences that hinder our ability to make objective decisions. The brain is capable of making very quick decisions, but it often does so with extreme biases, even when we think we are unbiased.

For all of the talks, go here: https://www.ted.com/playlists/164/how_we_make_choices

How do you think this effects our day to day actions?

We kicked off this past weekend on Friday with a huge party at Stag House/Doe.Tique to celebrate their grand opening and the birthday of both owners! Just to recap, we had a great time and you will see by the pictures below, that we were not the only ones who had fun. The mayor of Glen Rock even made an appearance to cut the ribbon, officially opening the salon and welcoming it to Glen Rock. We brought a couple of games, which you will see in the videos below, but the most fun of all was the oversized Jenga. It was a great time, and if you were in attendance, leave some comments below, letting everyone know what they missed and why they should head over to Stag House/Doe.Tique for a great haircut and an even better time!

About Stag House/Doe.Tique (http://www.njstaghouse.com/)

A passion for barbering and a knack for people. It was less than three years before they started to encounter full books, daily. They spent their spare time together, marketing themselves, mixing and mingling with locals within Bergen County, NJ and in turn, acquired a strong, loyal following of men that supported their every move.

They decided to bring their book, and purchased Salon Salon Rocks in Glen Rock, NJ. With this space, they split it down the middle to accommodate the loyal clients the previous salon was experiencing, as well as their own.

Stag and its counterpart, Doe.Tique, strive themselves in local flavor, carrying products from New Jersey and New York, as well as host events after hours. Through the support of their staff and clients, they’re sure Stag will become a Bergen County staple.

A book Ryan is addicted to…

My favorite book is probably anything written by my favorite author, Ernest Hemingway. My infatuation with Hemingway all started when my older brother recommended the Old Man and the Sea however, The Sun also Rises quickly became one of my all-time favorites. I did an intense analysis of this book in my English class and I was able to connect on new levels with the novel. Hemingway’s mastery of precise language and imagery makes his books just a lot of fun to read.

It’s Just Like Riding a Bike….. or is it?
It’s Just Like Riding a Bike….. or is it? 969 794 admin

In our series, “The Power of the Brain”, we will show you how powerful and complicated that your brain really is.

Today’s post is focused around: “Knowledge is not understanding.” The task appears simple enough – ride a bike. But what happens when you take an ordinary task and add a twist: When you turn the handle bars to the right, the front wheel turns left. When you turn the handle bars left, the wheel turns to the right. What implications do these small changes have on our brain? What happens when you relearn an old task a new way?

Leave comments below on the how this plays out in the professional world.
