How to Squeeze Extra Exercise Into Your Day
How to Squeeze Extra Exercise Into Your Day 960 640 Emilie

In today’s world, so many of us work 9 AM- 5 PM with very sedentary lifestyles. It’s hard to feel like we are active enough when we are forced to spend most of our days sitting down. Here are 5 great ways you can get moving, despite your hectic schedule.

1. Bike to lunch. We’ve all heard of people who bike to work, but for many of us this simply isn’t possible. Instead, try grabbing a bike rack and bringing your bike with you to work. That way, you can bike to a lunch spot nearby! If you want, you can bring a spare change of clothes with you in your car in the morning, and that way you don’t even have to bike to lunch in your work clothes. Or, if you prefer, find a lot to park in between home and work. That way you can drive most of the way, but you can bike whatever distance to work that you’d like!

2. Have an hourly “Stagnancy Check.” Some fitness watches already have a feature for this specific purpose- lightly vibrating whenever you haven’t moved for an hour. The more you pay attention to how much time has passed since the last time you walked around, the more you will realize how much time you have spent sitting. To do your own stagnancy check,  take a short walk around your building once an hour. It doesn’t have to be long, just enough to get you moving. You can even use your walk to grab coffee, or take a detour when visiting another room or office. Or if you prefer, climb up and down a few flights of stairs, just to get the blood flowing!

3. Book exercise into your schedule. Often when we’re really busy, the hardest part about exercising is that the day just gets away from us. Plan your exercise into your schedule, and block it off just like you would a meeting. When meetings and other commitments arise, it’s easy to fall into a pattern of moving your workout in order to make room for that commitment. But when you make this into a habit, it doesn’t take long before exercise is rarely in your schedule. Avoid rearranging your daily exercise slot to make room for other commitments. When you do have to rearrange your workout schedule, treat it the same as any other meeting, and only rearrange it if you have time to put it elsewhere in your schedule for the day.

4. Change your morning routine. When you have to get to work early, it’s incredibly difficult to wake up any easier than you absolutely need to. However, there are so many benefits to exercising in the morning. In general, working out in the morning will rev your metabolism, and keep it boosted throughout the day. Additionally, by exercising before you eat breakfast, this forces your body to reach into your fat stores for energy, instead of simply using energy from meals you have eaten earlier in the day. That means more fat loss! So if you don’t have much time in the morning, try exercising before you leave for work in the morning, and then grab some breakfast once you arrive at the office. If you are trying unsuccessfully to wake up earlier, force yourself to wake up 5 minutes earlier each day. Sticking to these small increments can be challenging, and it won’t be easy at first, but it will slowly adjust your body to waking up earlier each morning.

5. Help out your kids. When your life consists of being a constant chauffeur for your children, when do you find time to exercise? Try participating in some of the same sports as your children (or at least sports nearby). Finding ways to be active while your children are at practice is a good way to get in some extra exercise, and the more you learn about your kid’s sports the more you will have something in common to talk about and enjoy! While your child is at soccer practice, see if you can get a soccer lesson from someone local in nearby fields. You can also grab a yoga mat to do some yoga at the park nearby, or simply bring a change of clothes and go for a walk or run while your kid is at practice! Search for nearby tennis courts, pools, golf courses, racket ball centers, and other ways to be active right nearby.

We Bet You Didn’t Know Tea Could Do This
We Bet You Didn’t Know Tea Could Do This 960 599 Emilie

We’ve all heard that tea is amazingly healthy, but do you actually know why? We didn’t, so we decided to look through scientific research to find some of tea’s most impressive functions. We were shocked by just how much tea can do, and we’re sure you will be as well! This list will turn you into a tea drinker in no time.

1. Improves cognitive attention. Not only does tea make you more alert, it also improves your cognitive attention in several ways. Attention refers to the ability to focus on specific information, while cutting out less important information. A recent double blind study showed that black tea aids with visual accuracy with attention tasks. So the next time you’re trying to concentrate on one task, don’t just rely on coffee, reach for the tea!

2. Antioxidant properties. Green tea is especially high in antioxidants, which is awesome for your health in many ways. Antioxidants help improve your immune system, decrease risk of heart disease, and has a helping role in preventing all other kinds of diseases.

3. Anti-aging effects. White tea is less processed than any other caffeinated tea- black, green or oolong. Therefore, it has additional health benefits that other teas do not have. White tea has high antielastase and anticollagenase properties, which leads to anti-aging effects for your skin and lungs (among other organs). That means white tea will have you looking and feeling younger.

4. Anti-obesity effects. White tea has been shown to be the tea most effective at stimulating lipolytic activity. What does that mean? It means that white tea helps break down fat better in your body. This decreases stores of fat deposits, and fights against obesity.

5. Anti-cancer effects. Recently, studies have shown that dandelion roots actually have antioxidant and detoxifying effects. But, even more astonishingly, they actually increase apoptosis (otherwise known as cell death) in pancreatic cancer cells. There are also studies that suggest these same effects may occur with leukemia and melanoma cancer cells. With such amazing effects, grab some dandelion root tea for yourself. White tea has also shown to increase apoptosis in regards to non small cell lung cancer.

6. Anti-dementia effects. Dementia has no cure, and while tea does not cure dementia, green tea has been shown to slow its effects. Some studies have even shown improved cognitive functioning in dementia patients after they begin to drink tea regularly. The reasons behind these effects are not entirely clear, but it may be because tea leads to increased frontal and parietal lobe connectivity. It may also work by enhancing the health benefits of dementia medicines.

7. Anti-diabetes effects. It turns out that black tea actually fights against type 2 diabetes. Research suggests that by drinking 3-4 cups a day, your risk of diabetes  decreases by 20%.

8. Improves bone health. Although most bone-related tea studies have been done on non-human animals, there is research suggesting many types of bone benefits from drinking tea. This includes prevention of bone loss from aging, and the increase of many other bone health and strengthening properties.

Believe it or not, this is just a short list! Tea has also been linked to improvement with cardiovascular disease and improved feelings of relaxation. So sit down and grab a cuppa, you won’t be sorry!

Why You’re Working Out But Not Losing Weight
Why You’re Working Out But Not Losing Weight 960 639 Emilie

We all know that exercise is important, and provides a long list of health and medical benefits. But at the end of the day, many of us exercise with one clear goal in mind: to lose weight. How is it possible that we can work out multiple times a week (or even every day!) and still not lose weight?

I know this pain all too well. Most of our bodies have a comfortable size and body shape, and it takes a lot for us to change that size from where our body wants it. I have felt like no matter how active I am, no matter how hard I push myself in my workouts, I see very little change. But believe it or not, there still is hope! Take a look below for common reasons you aren’t losing weight, even though you feel like you should be.

You’re not pushing yourself in your workouts. I talk to a lot of people who are frustrated with weight loss, because they exercise every day and still see no results. You may be frustrated because you are using a workout program that originally helped you lose weight, but is now showing no benefits. The problem is that any time your body becomes used to a workout, it makes it easier for your body to find its way back to it’s desired shape and size, despite your regular workouts.

Let’s take running for example. If you are going for a run every morning, you may not lose any weight because your body is never hitting the fat burning zone. Based on your age and baseline HR, each person has a different “fat burning zone.” That means that unless you are hitting a certain BPM during your workouts, it may be good exercise, but you are less likely to start burning fat. Without hitting this fat burning zone, your body will only chip away at the fat that is easy for it to take away. That means the areas on your body which are already slim may lose weight, but you may not see a difference in your problem areas, like your thighs or tummy.

So how do you fight against this? Of course, many people will say to shake up your workout routines, and this is a great idea. However, even doing different things each day (legs one day, cardio another, etc) is not enough. Instead, every time you do each of these workouts, you should be mixing up your exercises. Personally, this sounds exhausting to me, and if I had to put that much creativity into each workout, I would simply never exercise.

Instead, there are several ways you can accomplish this without having to design creative workouts. The first that I like to suggest is fitness apps. There is a huge slew of free apps which will give you a list of workouts to choose from. This steps you through new workouts each day, without the need to create workouts yourself. The second suggestion I like to give is to push yourself in your current workouts. If you run each day, set goals for yourself to make yourself run faster. If you don’t like setting goals, try doing it only 3 times a week. Just make sure your goal is enough to push yourself: not so low that you continue to see little difference. That being said, don’t make it so high that it’s impossible to reach!

Your workouts are one-dimensional. Whether you only weight train or only do cardio, you are creating a recipe for poor weight loss. Let’s start with people who only weight train. By googling “best ab workouts” you will probably find tons of suggestions: from crunches to planking. However, while this will help strengthen your ab muscles, it will do very little to actually burn fat in those areas. That means that while your abs are getting stronger, you will only see so much benefit unless you pair these exercises with cardio, which will burn off that top layer of fat.

However, this does not mean exercising without weight training is effective. Let’s return to my previous example about running. Whenever people only do cardio, your body falls into a comfortable routine, and it becomes a lot more difficult to whittle your middle. Weight lifting is exceedingly important in burning calories, and you will actually end up expending more calories the more muscle you have (which helps you lose weight all day long!). To see even more benefits to weight lifting, check out the article by bodybuilding.com here.

Overall it is very important for both genders to partake in cardio and weightlifting. Just because you haven’t used the big weights at your gym before, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t now! If you feel like you will look foolish, learn how to use weights and various machines a few times with a personal trainer or a gym buddy. Soon, you will be able to apply what you have learned even when you aren’t working out alongside a pro.

Your diet doesn’t reflect your weight loss goals. A lot of us make the mistake of seeing weight loss as a calorie exchange. In other words, if we run 2 mile (losing about 200 calories), we believe that we can have a 100 calories snack throughout the day, and we will still come out ahead (because we burned off 200 calories while running). Technically, this is absolutely true: if the only difference in your diet all day is that 100 calorie snack.

The problem arises because typically the more we exercise, the more we crave heartier, more filling food. That means each time you eat, you might eat a slightly larger meal. You might eat slightly more of the sauce on your plate (adding calories without even realizing it). Whether we want to admit it, it is so easy for us to gain back the calories we have burned just through normal eating throughout the day. That means that each time we choose a small snack (with the idea that it still doesn’t cover our new calorie deficit) we are likely incorrect, because we have already used up part of that deficit through regular eating. Each small snack and meal we choose actually does matter.

The other way this harms us is when we forget how much everything we eat adds up. I fall into this trap a lot: if I am regularly exercising, I believe I should be able to reward myself. That means sometimes you may grab a small latte instead of a black coffee. Or you may choose to split a dessert with someone. Every now and then, this is true. But when “a small reward” becomes our constant mentality, we end up exceeding the number of calories we have burned. Soon, we are back at our normal weight once again.

This may sound depressing, because it feels like you can never indulge yourself. However I am definitely not suggesting something so extreme! Instead, try taking a few days to journal everything you eat (that includes the sauces and items used to cook each food). This will make you far more aware of what you are eating, allowing you to make better, healthier choices with each meal and snack. That way, when you choose to indulge yourself (with some chocolate, an icecream cone, etc) it’s not a big deal because you are eating well throughout the rest of your day.

This “Healing the Children” Volunteer will Give You a New Outlook on Life
This “Healing the Children” Volunteer will Give You a New Outlook on Life 932 621 Emilie

Healing the Children New Jersey is a local chapter of Healing the Children, an amazing volunteer organization which provides medical services to children in need, both internationally and domestically. HTCNJ provides these services in many ways- from sending medical prescriptions abroad, to sending entire medical teams to perform operations in countries like South Africa and Panama.

Other times, when international children have especially complex diagnoses, it becomes necessary to bring the child to the United States for extended medical care. This stay can last a few months, or it could even last over a year. During this time, children stay with incredibly generous volunteer host families, who devote their time towards helping children in need.

One such host family is the Alectoridises. Incredibly, this family has hosted children with HTCNJ for over 20 years. Recently, I was lucky enough to talk to Jackie Alectoridis to learn more about some of these amazing experiences that she has had over the past two decades.

What is the most memorable experience you have had with HTCNJ?

Honestly every experience is memorable.  It is hard to just pick one.  I have always felt as though each experience is unique and a miracle in it’s own way.  I have seen burn victims scarred from head to toe share how grateful they are for life!  I have witnessed children who are blind or missing a limb learn survival skills that most adults haven’t learned in a lifetime.  And all of them are happy…..just purely and sincerely happy.  They have all taught me so much about living and have each been a gift in their own way.  I could write a book about each of them.
Can you tell us about one of the children who has stayed with you over the years?
Again, it is difficult to choose one child or story but Lesly’s story is quite a miracle.  Lesly is from the Domincan Republic and comes from a very poor family.  Lesly, like many other family members on her mother’s side, including her mother, brother, aunts, uncles, and cousins was born with cataracts.  This genetic condition would easily have been corrected when Lesly was a baby if she was born in the United States.  But none of Lesly’s family members received corrective surgery and Lesly’s case was worse than any other case in the family.
Lesly was completely blind.  She arrived in the United States when she was 3 years old.  She spent the first day in my home scanning the environment with her hands.  She covered the entire house, touching everything and learning where everything was.  She smelled and licked many things, using her other senses to learn about her new environment.  For a three year old child she was quite independent and a tough cookie.
We were so excited for her first appointment with the eye doctor to see what the process would be to help get this child vision.  Unfortunately the doctor explained that because Lesly had gone without vision for almost 4 years that even if they removed the cataracts her brain may never learn vision.  They went ahead with the surgeries but they were not hopeful.  They performed 3 surgeries.  They removed the cataracts one eye at a time and one last surgery to correct the muscles that were causing her eyes to cross.  After each surgery we waited anxiously for a miracle.  We stood in front of her and waved our hands and held up fingers and prayed for some kind of reaction……but nothing.

One day, several weeks after surgery, our friend’s daughter was playing with Lesly and stuck her toungue out at her.  Lesly mimicked her and stuck her tongue out also!  Just like that….Lesly started to see things.  She was recognizing her reflection in windows and looking at herself in the mirror exclaiming “It’s me!  It’s me!”  She was writing on everything.  Taking crayon and coloring on her own hands and proudly showing everyone the scribbles in the palm of her hand.  She would scribble on table surfaces and then stare closely at her creations for several minutes at a time.   On Halloween she admired her reflection in her witches costume and stared forever examining every piece of a candy in a big bowl.
By the time Lesly left us in her adorable glasses she could tell the difference between pink and purple.  Knowing that there was hope for her to read and write was a miracle.  After Lesly left her little brother Louie also came and received the same surgery and glasses and because he was younger his vision was even better!
Why do you volunteer for HTCNJ and what does HTCNJ mean to you?
Being a host parent is something that is part of me.  Every child that has stayed with me has become a part of my family.  When I think about how each child’s life is changed because of the work that Healing the Children does, I think about my own children and what that would mean to me…..and what it does mean to me because of how much I love each of these children.  One case at a time…..every one is worth it and changes the lives of many and hopefully changes the world for the best.

Top 5 Fairs, Festivals and Events in NJ This Weekend
Top 5 Fairs, Festivals and Events in NJ This Weekend 720 720 Emilie

Trying to find something to do this weekend? Take advantage of the amazing fairs and festivals that can be found across New Jersey during the summer months! We have scoured every list of fairs, festivals and events within the Garden State to give you our top picks! Take a look and let us know what you think!

Wine Events

One of the best places to find upcoming Food and Wine events is New Jersey Monthly, which provides a long list of events for every weekend! Our top choice from their list for the weekend is the Four Sisters Winery Barefoot Grape Stomping event. Although a little pricey (at $35 per person), you get a lot of bang for your buck. Four Sisters Winery is located in Belvidere, NJ, and the Stomp is this Saturday (July 17th) from 1-4 PM. Reservations are required so call early!

What Makes it Unique: Not only do you actually get to stomp your own grapes while barefoot (which is super fun!), the day is full of many great activities. You will have a wine tasting with a home cooked meal of spaghetti and meatballs, bread, and dessert. This is followed by the stomping, a cellar tour, and dessert wine tastings. The day is jam-packed with fun, and you will truly get a once in a lifetime wine experience!

Festivals

If you’re looking for local fairs and festivals to check out each weekend, head over to Everfest.com, which provides a list of the best festivals for every weekend. Our top choice on this weekend’s Everfest list is the Atlantic City Caribbean Carnival. The festival has a parade, costumes, and takes place right on the Atlantic City Boardwalk! The Carnival will occur this Friday and Saturday (July 15th and 16th). The parade (noon-6 pm Saturday) is free to visitors, with the Friday after-party costing $25 per ticket, and the Saturday after-party costing $30 per ticket.

What Makes it Unique: The AC Caribbean Carnival is an amazing cultural experience right in your backyard! Everyone has extravagant costumes, and food and craft vendors will offer authentic Caribbean treats. There will be a band, steel-pan orchestra, and beer garden. The festival will be incredibly colorful and exciting, plus you can relax by the pool with food until the Glow Party starts Saturday night at 10 PM.

Family Fun

We love Jersey Family Fun because it lists all types of fairs and festivals that are perfect for the whole family. Plus, each fair is easily searchable by which county you live in! Our top choice this weekend from the Jersey Family Fun list is the Monmouth Park Surf and Turf Seafood Festival. The festival occurs both this Saturday and Sunday, from 11:30 AM to 5 PM. Parking is $5, Admission is $5, and children under 12 are free.

What Makes it Unique: The Surf and Turf Festival offers the best of the best when it comes to local seafood. You can find everything from lobster, to shrimp, to clam chowder. But that’s not all! The festival takes place at the Monmouth County Racetrack, and live races will occur throughout the day, starting at 12:50 PM. There will also be tons of games, including a free Family Fun Day on Sunday!

Food Festivals

Edible Jersey is one of my favorite sites because I love food, and Edible Jersey is your one-stop place to find the best food events for every weekend of the year. For this weekend, Edible Jersey highlights the New Jersey State Crab Festival, which is an all day event from 11 AM to 10 PM. The crab festival is located in Wildwood, NJ. Event admission is completely free!

What Makes it Unique: The State Crab Festival is awesome because it’s family friendly and all about food! There will be a ton of entertainment as well as a crab race, but also plenty of refreshments for adults. This includes a beer garden as well as crabby bloody marys!

Music Events

As you probably know, Visit NJ is an amazing website, because you can find things to do every weekend, in every category imaginable. Visit NJ mentions two great local music festivals for the weekend: the WNTI Stage in Columbia, and the Black Potatoe Music Festival in Clinton. Although we are excited for both, we are especially excited for the 20th anniversary of the Black Potatoe, which extends all the way from Wednesday-Sunday.

What Makes it Unique: The Black Potatoe Music Festival is a great place to see top indie artists from all over the country, including singers who have played all over the world. However, they will also have many great local indie groups. Headliners include Willy Porter, the Matt Angus Thing, and Ellis Paul over the weekend.

The Alementary in Hackensack- Jersey’s New Microbrewery
The Alementary in Hackensack- Jersey’s New Microbrewery 600 555 Emilie

The Alementary Brewing Co. is the first microbrewery of Hackensack, and a very recent addition to the list of microbreweries across New Jersey. Alementary opened only about three months ago (their grand opening was April 16, 2016). It was started by Blake Crawford and Mike Roosevelt, who wanted a local brewery that Bergen County could claim as its own. Thus, you will see that Alementary embraces the culture and atmosphere of the Bergen County area which inspired it’s creation.

Interestingly enough, both Crawford and Roosevelt have scientific backgrounds, and only switched to the beer industry more recently. Roosevelt has a doctorate in molecular biology, and Crawford was previously a chemical engineer. Nowadays, they are excited to focus their attention on creating fresh, local beer for their community.

Even though only open for a few short months, Alementary has had many exciting events and new beers introduced to their tap list. Just one week ago, they added their first Double IPA called “Hops and Dreams.” Additionally, Alementary offers a wide variety of beers currently available in their tap room. This ranges from their “Let’s Begin” gose, to their “Bitter Steve” english bitter, to their “1st Session” session IPA.

If you’re looking to try some of their amazing brews, stop by Charlie Brown’s in Oradell on July 18th, 7-9 PM for Alementary’s Tap Takeover. All drafts will cost only $3! Proceeds will benefit Healing the Children New Jersey, a volunteer organization that provides medical services to children in need both internationally and domestically.

After checking out their amazing beers, make sure you pick up some Alementary merch. You can pick up a t-shirt for only $15, or grab yourself a hat or a hoodie! To learn even more about this microbrewery which seeks to bring out the best of both art and science, check out their website. New Jersey’s new microbrewery will be sure to blow you away!

Healing the Children New Jersey: The Amazing Organization Right in Your Backyard
Healing the Children New Jersey: The Amazing Organization Right in Your Backyard 960 360 Emilie

Healing the Children New Jersey, a chapter of the larger organization, Healing the Children, is an amazing volunteer organization located right nearby in Hawthorne, NJ. This incredible organization brings medical care to children in need, both internationally and domestically. In fact, the New Jersey chapter alone has provided medical services to 33,000 children since 1981 (about 1,000 children per year).

So what does Healing the Children New Jersey do? HTCNJ offers four main services. The first is that they provide medical care for New Jersey children with complicated diagnoses and developmental disabilities. This includes anything from providing eyewear, to orthotics, to therapy, to special care.

HTCNJ also provides international care. Volunteer doctors and nurses have been sent abroad to assist in a large number of countries, including Bolivia, India, Kenya, Panama, Thailand, Vietnam, and more. These volunteer teams consist of everything from pediatricians to surgeons to translators. Most recently, HTCNJ traveled to Trujillo, Peru to provide dental and ophthalmologic care. HTCNJ additionally sends medical aid to other countries, including medications, dental supplies, and surgical equipment to hospitals.

For children with more complex medical needs that can’t be served internationally, international children are brought to New Jersey for an extended stay during which they receive medical care. This may last anywhere from a few months to over a year. During this time, children stay with volunteer host families in the area. HTCNJ will help with the process of getting a Visa and airline ticket for each child that comes over internationally.

For more information about these amazing programs, check out their website today! It contains additional information about past trips, their annual fundraising Gala, and services that HTCNJ provides.

So how can you help? HTCNJ is always looking for volunteer families to host visiting children. Consider hosting a child while he/she is undergoing medical treatment, and you will truly change a life forever! If you are looking for a way to help without such a large commitment, contact HTCNJ about fundraising campaigns, or about bringing HTCNJ to your workplace, where they can give a presentation about the organization. You can also make a difference by donating here, where over 90% of your donation will go directly to programs and services.

An even easier way to help HTCNJ is by liking the United EVENTures Facebook Page. For every like that we receive until July 20th, we will donate $1 to HTCNJ. Do your part and tell your friends to help!

Why Your Team-building Efforts are Falling Flat
Why Your Team-building Efforts are Falling Flat 960 677 Emilie

We all know how important it is to keep our teams motivated and working well together. Team building efforts can be incredibly useful at teaching groups how to work efficiently and effectively. In addition, they prove necessary for increasing feelings of competency and motivation. However, not all team-building events and practices may be as successful as you would hope. Here are several reasons your team may be under-performing, according to research.

Your team members are confused about who has control. Two key methods for motivating and improving team success are 1) use of control, and 2) team building. The idea behind using control is that it allows you to oversee your team’s progress more easily, and thus you will be able to guide them towards greater success and efficiency. Team building is meant to improve communication and collaboration between your team members, thus aiding with efficiency as well. A recent study paired team members together, analyzing the effects of both methods (control and teamwork). Although both methods improved team efficiency when used individually, efficiency was actually hindered for teams who successfully accomplished the team building task and were placed under the effect of external control. The researchers theorized that team building experiences lead members to feel like they have been handed greater control over the task at hand. Thus, when external control is also utilized, team members become frustrated because they do not know if they should be taking more initiative (thus keeping more control for themselves), or if their superiors still maintain all control by constantly regulating sub-tasks. Thus, team building efforts can be very useful, but if team members are micromanaged it will send mixed messages and actually hinder their ability to be effective.

You aren’t focusing on the importance of transformational leadership. Transformational leadership is the idea that through leadership and guidance we can mentor team members, transforming individuals into leaders. Recent research has demonstrated a relationship between transformational leadership and team-building, showing the important interaction between these two interventions. If your team-building efforts are falling flat, it may be because you are not simultaneously focusing on transforming your members into leaders. Team-building is about more than learning communication and collaboration, it must also highlight other important leadership skills, such as decision making, problem solving, and the ability to give definitive instruction.

Your project manager isn’t considering the different needs throughout project stages. Bruce Tuckman’s team development model analyzes the important stages a team must go through before performing as a cohesive whole. He suggests that the team first undergoes a “forming” period, during which the project manager must sell each member on the role he/she needs to play. If members are not convinced they are playing the right role, it is up to the project manager to assert control over the final decision and convince each individual that his/her role is necessary for completion of the task at hand. During the next stage, “Storming,” dominant members may try to gain more control, whereas less dominant individuals may begin to reduce the role they are playing. It is up to your project manager to continue asserting control and to maintain balance between each member’s position. Thus, it is crucial that your project manager focuses on maintaining team roles during the early stages of a project, and then turns his attention to the project itself only after team members have adjusted into the roles each person needs to play.

Overall, although team building is very important, not every team-building attempt will be successful if the previously mentioned factors are not taken into consideration. Think about each goal you want your team-building event to accomplish, not just the improvement of communication and morale.

Top 5 New U.S. Athletes to Watch in Rio
Top 5 New U.S. Athletes to Watch in Rio 960 640 Emilie

With the 2016 Rio Olympics just around the corner, we can’t wait to watch some of our most impressive athletes. With a huge variety of sports, we have a large number of athletes that will be competing in their first ever Olympic games this summer. Here is our top 5 list of new Olympic athletes to keep your eye on during the Rio games.

Simone Biles: Gymnastics

Although the Olympic Gymnastics team has not yet been officially selected (the Women’s team trials will occur on July 8th and 10th), Simone Biles is a complete lock for the team. This past weekend Biles won the United States Nationals all around title for the fourth consecutive year. She has also won the World all around championship for three consecutive years, and has been decorated with World floor and beam championships for years. Not only is she considered the best gymnast in the world today, many consider her the greatest gymnast of all time. Rio will be Biles’ first Olympics, although she is likely to be accompanied by returning Olympic athletes Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas. Powerful and consistent, she is quite a sight to watch. Check out her floor routine at the 2016 P&G Championships here.

Steele Johnson: Diving

You may recognize the name David Boudia, as he was the first U.S. male to receive an Olympic gold medal in diving, which occurred just last year at the 2012 London Olympics. Rio will be Boudia’s third Olympics (in 2008 and 2012 he was with synchronized diving partner Thomas Finchum). However, this is the first year Boudia will be diving alongside Johnson. Johnson and Boudia actually grew up diving together in West Lafayette, Indiana (with Johnson a few years behind Boudia). Not only are Johnson and Boudia a force to be reckoned with in synchronized diving (easily clinching the position as our Olympic team during the recent trials), Johnson will also prove to be very competitive in the individual 10 m platform event. During the semifinals of trials he actually led in front of Boudia, and by the end of trials he was not far behind his synchronized partner. Check our Johnson and Boudia’s third round Olympic Trials semi dive here.

April Ross: Beach Volleyball

Yet another old teammate with a new partner is Kerri Walsh Jennings, who used to partner with Misty May-Treanor. The two of them were considered by many to be the best beach volleyball team of all time. The moment Walsh Jennings grabbed the gold medal with May in the London Olympics (with Ross and her partner at the time, Jennifer Kessy, grabbing the silver), Jennings immediately talked to Ross about continuing with her after Misty’s retirement. She identified Ross as the next best athlete in the sport, and the two have been working tirelessly in preparation of the Rio Olympics. Since London, the new pair has managed several impressive wins: including gold medals at the Fuzhou Open in China and the Moscow Grand Slam.

Morgan Craft: Skeet Shooting

At only 23 years old, Craft has been shooting since age 14 and will be heading to her first Olympics in Rio. Craft’s success has rocketed over the past few years. In 2013 she won the Junior National Championships and the Bronze medal at Nationals, and by 2015 she was the World Champion (also winning the 2016 World Cup Cyprus). She grabbed the spot to Rio by beating fellow teammate Caitlin Connor, who was the previous reigning National Champion. Craft has just been getting more and more successful, and could very easily scoop up another medal for the U.S.

Mikaela Mayer: Boxing

Heading into the 2012 London Olympics, Mayer narrowly missed out on making the Olympic Team. Ever since she has proven to be more and more successful, until she eventually scored a gold medal at this year’s Olympic Trials. She was the National Gold Medalist in 2012, 2014 and 2015. She will be sure to keep fighting as the Olympics gets closer to be the best athlete she can be.
